Leaders in Sustainability Initiatives
IN HERVEY BAY

Australia Ocean King Prawn Company is at the forefront of sustainability efforts in Hervey Bay, we are committed to driving eco-friendly initiatives that benefit both the community and the environment. Through innovative solutions and sustainable practices, we aim to create a greener future for our oceans.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is the leading third-party certification scheme that rates the sustainability credentials of a fishery and awards certification where MSC standards are met

The decision to begin our MSC Certification journey in 2020 was prompted by several factors. Major supermarkets, wholesalers and export customers are moving toward a mandate of only purchasing seafood that has third party sustainability Certification. We had the foresight to see that this requirement was fast becoming the norm and without it, our existing and potential client base would diminish significantly in the coming years.

To achieve MSC Certification we recognised the need to put in place additional procedures and documentation to support our good management and sustainable fishing practices. Robust operational procedures would give us peace of mind that the business was operating as efficiently as possible, stock levels were well within a sustainable range and there were no significant changes to the environment in which our fleet fished. The additional documented monitoring would also act as insurance against misinformation and propaganda that is often directed at the otter trawl fishing industry.

We are very proud to have achieved MSC Certification on 24th March 2023. We are the first Queensland fishery to attain a third-party sustainability certification and the only sustainably certified source of Eastern King prawn.

Our Certification attests to our unwavering commitment to sound management practices and sustainable fishing methods. Continuously refining our procedures, we strive to uphold our legacy of excellence while safeguarding the ocean’s resources for future generations

Setting Sail Towards Sustainability

With a fleet of 11 deep-water trawlers, we navigate the vast waters off Queensland’s coast in search of the largest sizes of Eastern king prawn. This commitment to deep-water fishing reflects our dedication to providing premium seafood while minimising environmental impact. By investing in sustainable practices and achieving MSC certification, we ensure that our operations align with the highest standards of marine stewardship.

Pioneers in Sustainability Certification

We are the first to achieve third-party sustainability certification. Our MSC certification attests to the company’s unwavering commitment to sound management practices and sustainable fishing methods. Continuously refining our procedures, we strive to uphold our legacy of excellence while safeguarding the ocean’s resources for future generations.

Turtle Excluder Devices

All our vessels use Turtle excluder devices (TEDs) modify trawl nets to allow larger animals to escape. These animals include sea turtles, stingrays, sharks and sponges. TEDs are usually fitted into a trawl net at the beginning of the codend. At this point in the net, water-flow is fastest and maximises the ability of a TED to separate target animals from non-target animals.
